Ammonite - Placenticeras

This ammonite is a member of the genus Placenticerus defined by its grooved center, ornate sutures and moderately involuted umbilicus. The specimen is from the Pierre Shale in western South Dakota. The shell measures approximately 7 ¾” x 9 ½” x 2” and weighs 15.5 lbs (including the base it is sitting on). The fossil can be lifted off the base and displayed alone.
